New visa for digital nomads

Author: José Guerreiro
Regulatory Decree no. 4/2022, of 30 September

Last 30th September, it was published the Regulatory Decree no. 4/2022, which establishes the regime of the new temporary visa in Portugal, especially conceived for digital nomads.

This community, which brings together skilled workers who work remotely, has found over the past few years in Portugal the place to settle and pursue their professional activities, even if only in temporarily basis.

With a rising demand in the main urban areas, this concentration of qualified human resources has intensified in the inland regions, as well as in Azores and Madeira.

Among the most attractive conditions that these workers find in Portugal are the exceptional climate as well as the security conditions, the low cost of living and the good infrastructures, with emphasis on the recent spread of multiple co-working spaces.

The application should be made at the Portuguese embassies and consular offices or at Serviços de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras (“SEF”). In turn, this should be accompanied by documentation proving the tax residence in Portugal; evidence that the monthly income of the last three months was higher than four Portuguese minimum wages, i.e. Euro 2820 (gross amount) and a work contract or proof of self-employment.

Furthermore, these visas are valid for up to one year (or renewable multiple times for up to five years) and, like any Portuguese citizen, they also guarantee the right to travel to any part of the Schengen Area.
